Lifelink: 118.3e Damage dealt to an object or player by a source with lifelink causes that source’s controller to gain that much life, in addition to the damage’s other results.ħ02.13. Update: found the lifelink rules and the commander damage rules, to show the wording: After I finish writing this, I'll go check MtG rules about lifelink to make sure I didn't just say a colossal amount of BS. So, if you gave Niv mizzet lifelink then drew 20 cards and dealt 20 damage, then you would gain twenty life.Ĭommander damage on the other hand is written as combat damage only, but people usually learn it as "When the commander deals damage, it counts also as commander damage" because few people actually go up to check EDH rules. Lifelink activates whenever you deal damage. I feel like this might be confusion with "lifelink" abilities. My question is why do so many people have this impression that non-combat damage counts as commander damage or at least in specific situations? And does anyone here play with or know people who play with a house-rule variation of commander damage where non-combat damage counts? Because in my admittedly small sample size I’ve run into a lot of variation in what is allowed and I’m wondering where this is coming from. Weirdly enough when I got my Niv-Mizzet and made a deck months ago I was told by different people the same thing that his trigger counts for commander damage. Fortunately my games didn’t come down to me dealing commander damage for win or loss so at least things remained fair.

However numerous fellow players were under the impression that it did count as commander damage and as they’ve been playing much longer than I since I’m pretty new to the game I didn’t argue something that was useful to me anyway.īut clearly rules as written list that it’s combat damage only. I knew the rules interaction where commander damage only applied to combat damage from a commander not triggered abilities like Niv-Mizzet’s. So at my local small tournament I went in with a Niv-Mizzet Parun deck.
